Researching family history is fun and rewarding.

I have just started this and am in the process of talking to family members and looking at whatever records I can find on the internet. There are many resources available, and I have far from exhausted all the options.

MAPS are important! Knowing WHERE a relative was in what time period can save you hours and days of time. I'm saving up for Goldbug software's product that maps Europe through the centuries and their product that shows maps of the US through time. Hopefully, if I can just go to one place for a map that I need, I won't be searching for hours to see if I can find one that covers the 'right' time period.

Below is the link for Goldbug and a link to the USGS and the National Archive, all very cool places....

I'm going to try to start categorizing the links I add here to help you find what you're looking for, but realize that Cindi's list does a MUCH better job of giving you an exhaustive list of genealogical resources :) I'm just a hobbyist!

Research Tips

I'm very new to researching genealogy. I have discovered that records don't always use the same names, spellings, or dates for the same individual. Sometimes it becomes a creative effort to link a name to a known individual on the chart.

Be sure to evaluate the source of your information. Remember, you can't believe everything you read!

I've also had more luck investigating the maternal family lines at this point. Quite a few of them are in the US for many generations! I'm also discovering that family stories I heard as a child from my mother, grandmother, and aunts can help me narrow down alternatives when there are many people with the same name in the area. Though not all the stories are turning out to be 100% true!

My current goal is to back track all the main lines of our families to the time of their immigration to the United States, and find as many other living 'cousins' as I can.
